Working towards dementia friendly communities

Date published: 28/03/2017

In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, BAVO is working to raise awareness and address the needs of Pupils listening to talkpeople living with dementia in Bridgend County Borough through the Dementia Friendly Communities Programme ‘Dementia Friends’.

The programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way people think, act and talk about the condition. Whether you attend a face-to-face information session or watch the online video, ‘Dementia Friends’ it is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help.

To ensure that long-term sustainability is possible, volunteers within local areas are encouraged to become Dementia Champions to continue delivering the awareness sessions and link with local communities.

BAVO worked with ABMU Health Board and funding was agreed for a secondment post to BAVO from the Alzheimer’s Society to further existing relationships and develop new ones with schools, colleges, supermarkets, café’s, fire and police services.

Porthcawl Comprehensive School will be the first school in Bridgend County Borough to become Dementia Friends. They have wholeheartedly engaged with the programme to make every pupil and member of staff a Dementia Friend. Pupils have fully engaged in the sessions saying “I will do fun things with my Nan” and “If I find someone lost I will take them home.” A huge thank you goes to Headmaster Andrew Slade, Deputy Head Nadine Thomas, all members of staff and last but not least, the wonderful pupils for making this possible.

From being more patient in shop queues, to volunteering, to visiting someone you know living with dementia, ‘Dementia Friends’ is helping to create communities in which people living with dementia feel more understood and included. Maesteg is already a dementia friendly community and continues to spread the awareness to keep its status. We are also working with more communities within the county borough to take part in the programme.
